Conjunctions
Connecting words: und, oder, aber, sondern, denn, weil, dass, ob, obwohl, deshalb.
Konjunktionen (conjunctions) connect words, phrases, or clauses. German has two types: coordinating conjunctions (which don't change word order) and subordinating conjunctions (which push the verb to the end of the clause).
These connect two main clauses. Word order stays the same after them:
• und - and
• oder - or
• aber - but
• sondern - but rather / but instead
• denn - because (with main clause word order)
und - and

oder - or

aber - but

denn - because (coordinating)

Ich gehe nicht in die Schule, denn ich bin krank.
I do not go to school because I am sick.
These introduce a subordinate clause (Nebensatz). The VERB moves to the END of the subordinate clause:
Conjunction + Subject + [other elements] + VERB
Main clause and subordinate clause are separated by a comma.
