German Noun Gender

Understand masculine (der), feminine (die), and neuter (das) nouns - with patterns and examples.

Every German noun has a gender: masculine (männlich), feminine (weiblich), or neuter (sächlich). Unlike English, you must always learn a noun together with its article (der / die / das). German nouns are always written with a capital letter.

• der - masculine (m.) → der Mann (the man)

• die - feminine (f.) → die Frau (the woman)

• das - neuter (n.) → das Kind (the child)

• In the plural, ALL nouns use die regardless of gender.

Indefinite articles: ein (m./n.), eine (f.)
