Verb Conjugation
How German verbs work - regular patterns, irregular changes, and practical examples.
German verbs must agree with the subject (who is doing the action). The infinitive (dictionary form) usually ends in -en. To conjugate, remove -en and add personal endings. There are two main types: regular verbs (follow fixed rules) and irregular verbs (the stem changes).
Remove -en from the infinitive to get the stem, then add:
• ich → -e
• du → -st
• er / sie / es → -t
• wir → -(e)n (same as infinitive)
• ihr → -t
• sie / Sie → -(e)n (same as infinitive)
Example: lernen (to learn) → Stem: lern-
• ich lerne, du lernst, er lernt, wir lernen, ihr lernt, sie lernen

1. If the stem ends in -d or -t (e.g. arbeiten, finden, reiten), insert an -e- before du/er/ihr endings:
→ du arbeit-e-st, er arbeit-e-t, ihr arbeit-e-t
2. If the stem ends in -s, -z, -x or -ß (e.g. sitzen, heißen), the du-form drops the extra -s:
→ du sitzt (not sittzst), du heißt
3. Verbs ending in -eln (sammeln) lose the -e- in ich:
→ ich sammle (not ich sammele)
