Negation - nein, nicht, kein

The three ways to say 'no' in German: nein to answer, nicht to negate verbs/adjectives, kein to negate nouns.

German has three main ways to make a sentence negative. 'nein' answers a yes/no question. 'nicht' negates verbs, adjectives, adverbs and prepositional phrases. 'kein' negates a noun (it means 'not a' / 'no').

'nein' simply means 'no'. It is used to answer a closed (yes/no) question. It never changes its form.

For a fuller answer, follow 'Nein' with a complete sentence:

• Bist du müde? - Nein, ich bin nicht müde.

(Are you tired? - No, I am not tired.)

nein - Examples

Möchtest du ein Stück Kuchen? - Nein, danke.

මොශ්ටෙස්ට් ඩූ අයින් ෂ්ටික් කූඛෙන්? - නයින්, ඩාන්කෙ.

Would you like a piece of cake? - No, thanks.

සින්ට් සී ෆර්හයිරාටෙට්? - නයින්, ඉශ් බින් ලේඩිග්.

Are you married? - No, I am single.

'nicht' negates verbs, adjectives, adverbs, and prepositional phrases. As a rule of thumb:

• To negate a whole verb/sentence, 'nicht' goes at the END: Ich tanze nicht.

• To negate a specific word, 'nicht' goes directly BEFORE it: Der Salat ist nicht frisch.

Use 'nicht' (not 'kein') when there is no noun to negate.

nicht - Examples

Ich tanze nicht.

ඉශ් ටාන්ට්සෙ නිශ්ට්.

Ich kann nicht schwimmen.

ඉශ් කාන් නිශ්ට් ෂ්විමෙන්.

I don't know that.

'kein' means 'not a' / 'no' and is used to negate a noun. It takes the SAME endings as the indefinite article 'ein' - and, unlike 'ein', it can also be used in the plural.

• ein Mann → kein Mann (not a man)

• eine Frau → keine Frau (not a woman)

• ein Kind → kein Kind (not a child)

• die Bücher → keine Bücher (no books)

kein in the Nominativ

Quick rule: use 'kein' to negate a noun (one that would take ein / eine / no article), and 'nicht' for everything else - verbs, adjectives, adverbs, and nouns with a definite article. 'Ich habe kein Auto' (I have no car) vs. 'Ich fahre nicht' (I don't drive).
